The Società Cooperativa Oleificio Val D’Orcia, in the last few years has participated directly in projects that required cooperation between the various players in the production chain and brought about the development of new products, new processes or new technology.

These projects, promoted through the oils mills’ participation in Rural Development Programmes (RDP) in the Region of Tuscany, created partnerships between primary producers, processing companies, secondary processing companies and mechanical companies, commercial operators, service companies and public and private companies engaged in research and experimentation.

The implementation of these projects had an impact on the local area where the oil mill is located creating direct and indirect benefits to local farms and producers also through the spread of new agricultural techniques and scientific and technical information to support their activities.

APPAGO PROJECT: Applicazioni Agronomiche innovative per la Gestione dell’Olivicoltura collinare (Agronomic Innovations for Managing Hilly Olive Groves).

PROJECT COORDINATOR: Società Cooperativa Oleificio Val d’Orcia, la Fonte, 53023 – Castiglione d’Orcia (SI)

PARTNERS: Fondazione Clima e Sostenibilità (FI), Valle del Sole Farm, Castiglion d’Orcia (SI), Poggio al Vento Farm, Castiglion d’Orcia (SI), Podere Bernini Farm, Seggiano (GR), Dipartimento di Scienze delle Produzioni Agroalimentari e dell’Ambiente (DISPAA) (Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences) – Agronomy and Land Management Section at the University of Florence, Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences (DISPAA) – Plant Pathology and Entomology Section at the University of Florence, Dipartimento di Gestione dei Sistemi Agrari, Alimentari e Forestali (GESAAF)(Department of Agricultural Systems, Food and Forestry Management) – Agriculture and Forestry Engineering and Biosystems Section at the University of Florence.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the project are to evaluate the adaptability of innovative management techniques for olive groves, understood as the soil-plant-environment system in the context of production in Val d’Orcia, increase the quality and quantity of production, increase the profitability of farms, improve company performance in terms of environmental sustainability and preserve and protect the local area.

Among the objectives of the project there was also the creation of a LCA study of the olive oil sector that allows for a comparison of the activities carried out before and after the project. Apart from this there was also the creation of a sustainability protocol, the first of its kind in Tuscany for the production of Sustainable EVO oil. Its implementation will be evaluated by a third party (DNVGL).

The above-mentioned objectives are also reflected in the provisions of the regional Rural Development Plan, with particular reference to promoting food chain organisation and risk management in the agricultural sector and the transfer of  knowledge and innovation in the agricultural sector. The benefits relate to companies operating in the olive growing sector in disadvantaged and mountainous areas.
The Project was financed using public funds (EARFD).

MODOLIVI PROJECT: Rational management of human and natural resources in modern types of olive groves and by-products in processing olives.

PROJECT COORDINATOR: Società Cooperativa Oleificio Val d’Orcia, la Fonte, 53023 – Castiglione d’Orcia (SI)

PARTNER: Department of Cultivation and Protection of Wood Species ” G. Scaramuzzi”, University of Pisa, Department of Economics, Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Technology and Forestry, University of Florence, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of  Siena, Giganti Farm, Rapolano (SI), Bagno a Sorra Farm, Siena, Meloni Angiolo Farm, Montepulciano (SI), Panarese Giuseppe Farm, Montepulciano (SI), Stiglianese Farm, Chianciano Terme (SI), Cooperativa Agricola Olivicoltori Toscani Associati (FI), Cooperativo Valdesano Oil Mill (SI)

PROJECT OBJECTIVES: The general objective of the project was to transfer innovative protocols in the implementation of the main cultivation practices in modern types of olive groves and manage the by-products in processing olives in order to increase the level of competitiveness in Tuscan olive farms and reduce the environmental impact of the supply chain.

Evaluation of such activities was not only of a technical nature but also economic in order to quantify profitability. Technology transfer was carried out on farms in the province of Siena because in that area there are farms with different types of olive groves, competences and issues related to the use of by-products in processing olives. However the impact of technology transfer the object of measure 124 is generalisable to the entire olive growing territory in Tuscany.
The Project was financed using public funds (EARFD)
